Every year, thousands of women from all over the world (We treated patients from Canada, Armenia and Ireland recently!) seek solutions for vaginal laxity, decreased sensation, discomfort during intercourse, or simply a desire to feel more confident and connected to their bodies.
As one of the leading vaginal rejuvenation surgeons in the country, I hear many of the same questions, so today I’m answering them all in one place.
“What Exactly is Vaginal Tightening?”
“Vaginal tightening” can refer to external tightening (the vaginal opening or surrounding tissues – perineoplasty), internal tightening (the internal vaginal canal – vaginoplasty), or a combination of both. Women commonly seek treatment after childbirth, weight changes, hormonal shifts or simply aging – all of which naturally affect tissue elasticity and muscle tone.
There are two main modes of treatment:
- Surgical vaginal tightening
- Nonsurgical vaginal tightening
Each option serves a purpose depending on your goals, anatomy and the degree of laxity.
“What does Surgical Vaginal Tightening Involve?”
The most common surgical tightening procedures are perineoplasty and vaginoplasty, which repairs and tightens the internal vaginal canal by bringing separated muscles back together and removing excess tissue. This is ideal for women who want:
- Greater degree of tightening
- Improved sexual sensation
- Correction after childbirth
- Long-lasting and more dramatic results
At Labiaplasty Center of Los Angeles, surgical vaginal tightening is performed in our office with only local anesthesia. In most cases, the procedure takes one to two hours. Patients are relaxed – often watching a favorite movie or show! – and comfortable throughout the surgery.
These surgical results are considered permanent, though aging, large weight fluctuations and childbirth will still affect tissues over time.
Many patients combine vaginoplasty with perineoplasty (tightening the opening) or labiaplasty (reshaping and reducing the labia minora) to achieve both functional and aesthetic improvements.
“Is Vaginoplasty Painful? What is Recovery Like?”
Most women describe post-surgical discomfort as pressure and soreness, not sharp pain. After a couple days of rest coupled with an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen as needed, most patients can easily return to their regular activities, with a few exceptions like intercourse, tampon use and horseback or bike riding. Full recovery takes about six to eight weeks. My patients are given clear, specific instructions for recovery – along with a luxurious surgical recovery kit – to ensure best outcomes.
“What about Nonsurgical Vaginal Tightening?”
For women who want improvement with no surgery, no local anesthesia and no downtime, I offer nonsurgical tightening using energy-based devices that stimulate collagen and elastin remodeling. These treatments, like Viveve and Thermiva, can address mild to moderate laxity; vaginal dryness; vaginal thinning/vaginal atrophy; mild stress urinary incontinence; reduced sensation; and external skin laxity. Patients often feel warmth and tightening immediately, with full improvement over about three months as collagen rebuilds.
Nonsurgical vaginal tightening results typically last about 12 to 18 months, depending on age, hormones, lifestyle and pregnancy/childbirth. Most patients return for yearly “maintenance” sessions to sustain optimal results.
“How do I Know if I Need Surgical or Nonsurgical Tightening?”
Here’s a quick way to break down the difference, based on your current anatomy and overall vaginal-tightening goals.
If you’ve had multiple vaginal deliveries, feel significantly “loose” during intercourse and/or have trouble keeping tampons in, you would likely benefit most from surgical tightening.
If you want moderate tightening, better lubrication, improved orgasm quality or help with urinary dribbling, nonsurgical tightening works beautifully.
If you want benefits from both of those categories – and many women do! – we can work through the planning during your complimentary consultation.
“Does Insurance Cover Vaginal Tightening?”
Vaginoplasty, perineoplasty and energy-based tightening are all considered elective in the vast majority of cases, so they are typically not covered by insurance. My office provides transparent pricing and financing options to make treatment accessible. It’s worth noting that you can use your Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Savings Account (FSA) funds to pay for your treatments at Labiaplasty Center of Los Angeles.
“How do Women Feel After Treatment?”
The most common feedback I hear during our patient follow ups are:
- “I feel like myself again.”
- “Sex is much more comfortable and pleasurable. I have my libido back!”
- “I feel more confident in and out of the bedroom.”
- “Why didn’t I do this sooner?”
- “Where Should I Start?”
If you’re curious about surgical or nonsurgical vaginal tightening, the best first step is a consultation with a board-certified surgeon who specializes in female genital aesthetics. Every woman’s anatomy and goals are unique, so your treatment plan should be, too.
