You Can Address Volume Loss in the Labia Majora Without Fillers
They used Juvederm where!?
Yup – many medspas, plastic surgeons and aesthetic medical offices have begun using dermal fillers like Juvederm to add volume to the labia majora… but you might want to skip this increasingly-popular practice.
“Just because you can doesn’t mean you should,” says Dr. Courtenay Poucher, board-certified OB/GYN and lead surgeon at Labiaplasty Center of Los Angeles.

Here’s why women might be considering dermal filler for their labia. “As we age or go through hormonal changes like childbirth or menopause, it’s natural for some women to notice a loss of volume in the labia majora – the outer lips of the vulva. This volume loss can lead to a sagging or deflated appearance, sometimes making women feel self-conscious or uncomfortable in clothing or during intimacy,” explains Dr. Poucher.
While some aesthetic practitioners offer dermal fillers as a temporary fix for volume loss in the labia majora, Dr. Poucher takes a different approach.
“I do not recommend dermal fillers for the labia,” says Dr. Poucher. “The tissue in this area is highly mobile and vascular, which can lead to complications, migration or uneven results. Fillers inherently attract water so in times of water retention – salty meal, pre menstrual – the vulva can get even larger and uncomfortable. Instead, I prefer to address the patient’s concern at its source.”
Through labia majoraplasty, Dr. Poucher artfully reshapes and tightens the labia majora by removing excess or stretched tissue. Rather than adding volume artificially, this procedure restores a smoother, more contoured appearance naturally, resulting in a fuller visual look simply by removing the loose skin that causes the deflated shape.
The result? A tighter, more youthful silhouette of the outer labia without the use of foreign substances.
“Our patients often report not just cosmetic satisfaction, but improved comfort in everyday activities, from wearing fitted clothing to sitting or exercising,” says Dr. Poucher. “A really common sentiment here is, ‘I thought I wanted this for purely aesthetic reasons, but once I had healed, I noticed just how much more physically comfortable I felt!'”
This surgical approach is customized to each patient’s anatomy and goals, with a strong emphasis on preserving natural proportions and minimizing downtime. Most patients return to light activities within a few days and experience a full recovery in just a few weeks.
